There are a number of establishments in the Kuopio region where tourists can experience the genuine Finnish sauna, including the traditional wood-heated chimneyless smoke sauna. If you are looking for something very traditional, something very special or something very Finnish, smoke sauna is the thing!

One of the biggest smoke saunas in Finland is located in Rauhalahti. Adjacent to it there is an authentic lumberjack lodge, Jätkänkämppä, from the 1950′s where Traditional Finnish Evenings are arranged to complement sauna bathing with accordion music, a singsong, dancing and traditional food. In winter on Tuesdays (and in summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays) the Traditional Evening is offered to everyone, while at other times it is arranged for groups by appointment.

Also the Spa Hotel Kunnonpaikka in Siilinjärvi, only about 10 km from the centre of Kuopio, has a public smoke sauna.

It is also worth experiencing the wood-heated panoramic sauna "Pehku" on top of Tahkovuori Hill in Nilsiä, offering a wonderful view over the surrounding landscape of lakes and forests.
